The concept of self-belief is at the core of my practical leadership model. There are two elements of self-belief: self-efficacy and self-resiliency. Self-efficacy is the belief in your abilities to perform. Self-resiliency is the ability to bounce back when faced with adversities, make necessary course corrections, and then get back on track.
Your perception of your ability level can change, when you believe it is in your sphere of control. Most leaders, at some point, will find it helpful to invest in leadership development to refresh skills and connect with other leaders as a way to recharge their self-efficacy batteries.
As your self-efficacy improves, or your staff’s level of efficacy improves, and a shift in task ownership occurs. You will see the folks with the higher self-efficacy start taking on more difficult tasks. They strive for greater challenges, for something they can continue to master. The folks with the low self-efficacy will avoid taking on greater responsibility or will take on minor tasks.
